We all have that moment.
I was scrolling on instagram, sipping coffee on my couch,a link brought me to another — and suddenly, bam, I saw a room that feels like it speaks my language. (No I dont mean Italian but artistic language)
That’s exactly what happened this weekend when I found this blog Emily Henderson’s Teen Basement Makeover. Check it for inspiration.
The makeover instantly brought a smile to my face – It’s full of personality and fun. The gallery wall is bold yet balanced. It’s a youthful. It’smoody. It’s cozy and stylish yet totally relaxed. And It’s a masterclass in how to use abstract art to make a room feel just a little more human.
What I loved most: The way she used art as emotion
Instead of going for perfect symmetry or overly styled decor, Emily chose artworks personal to her friend, almost like a language to speak to emotions.
The gallery wall sparks joy and awe. It’s Playful. Full of color, texture, and story- Perfect match.
She didn’t just hang art to fill space — she curated a mood.
As an abstract artist, I felt an instant connection. As humans, our brain loves visual simulation.
Art, especially abstract art, is meant for this. It’s not decoration. It’s feelings. memory. Mood. Movement. And in this case, it brought the whole basement to life.
3 Interior Design Lessons We Can All Learn From This Makeover
1. Lean into the light (or lack of it)
No natural light? Make it moody. Emily’s use of deep wall color with soft, glowing sconces shows how to transform and embrace a space instead of fighting it.
2. Gallery walls don’t need to be perfect
What matters more: symmetry, or story? Her layout mixes shapes, orientations, and colors — but it feels balanced, because it’s intentional.
3. Let your art live outside the frame
Emily didn’t just hang a few prints and call it a day. She treated every part of the room like it matters. The shelves, the tables, the corners — all styled with intention. Sculptural objects, books, trays, even a stack of board games. It wasn’t random — it was all designed with art in mind, and the result is stunning.
How This Inspired My Own Studio Work
After seeing this project, I couldn’t stop thinking about color contrasts — dark spaces with soft color pops. Glossy finishes. Abstract shapes that feel tactile, not just visual.
It inspired a few new works: soft blues, dusty rose, pale golds layered over stormy greys.
Designed not to dominate a room — but to complete it.
I got back into painting abstract sculptures that I did not do for a while. Its so fun , I will be posting the pictures once finished.
A piece that would sit beautifully in a space just like this one.
Designers, here’s how to choose abstract art that actually works:
- Match the vibe, not the color.→ Your client’s room has a feeling. Pick art that reflects that emotion.
- Balance boldness with breathing space.→ Emily does this with pillows and art. You can do it with texture and tone.
- Use art objects, not just wall pieces.→ Sculptural pieces and boxes add dimension — and start conversations.
Final thoughts…
